    How to separate these mixtures?

    1. Solid cannot dissolve in Liquids
    Method: Filtration
The insoluble solids particles cannot pass through the pores of the filter paper, thus trapped. This is known as the residue.
    2. Solids that can dissolve in Liquids
    Method: crystallisation
The mixture is first heated to evaporate most of the liquid to form a hot saturated solution. It is then left to cool.

    3. Miscible Liquids
    Method: Simple Distillation
They have different boiling points, the liquid with the lowest point vaporises and is collected first.

    4. Immiscible Liquids
    Method: Using a separating funnel
    They have different densities.

    5. Air and Petroleum
    Method: Fractional Distillation
They have different boiling points. Air is compressed into liquid state due to pressure.

    6. Iron in a mixture(magnetic & non-magnetic materials)
    Method: Magnetic attraction
Iron is a magnetic material, thus it can be attracted by the magnet.

    7. Sand in a mixture
    Method: Filtration
The insoluble solid particles cannot pass through the pores of the filter paper, thus trapped. This is known as the residue.
